Mr. Ratan Naval Tata passed away leaving the business world to mourn and pay condolences to one of industry’s greatest leaders and custodian of the Tata Group. Paying tributes to JRD Tata, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, said the passing away of India’s second Bharat Ratna award winner is an irreparable loss and his legacy has shaped not just the Tata Group but also the nation. The strides made by this charismatic figure stretched far beyond the boardrooms to a much deeper pool of society.

A Visionary Leader

Not just a business magnate, Ratan Tata was a visionary who over the years has made Tata one of the most trusted and respected conglomerates in India. The way he led was about humility and the power of ethical business practices. During his tenure, he positioned the Tata Group to expand significantly by making large forays into new sectors such as information technology, steel, automobiles and introducing major improvements in companies belonging to cement and chemicals. It was during his tenure that Tata acquired iconic brands like Jaguar Land Rover and Corus Steel, which can be viewed as testaments to Singh’s vision and adaptability.

Early Life and Education

Ratan was born on December 28, 1937 into a prominent family— his great-grandfather founded the Tata group. He moved from the US to India in 1962, after finishing his education in architecture at Cornell University, to start out up within Indian the Tata Group. At the bottom of the pyramid, Tata worked in companies before finding his experience bearings which would become part of his ingredient for leadership.

The smaller roles to begin with was at Tata Steel and Telco (now Tata Motors), where he made significant contributions. And as one of these — when he began at the National Radio & Electronics Company — he had a knack for stepping into organizations and turning them around by zeroing out losses, growing their market share, which would be more than merely validated in his future successes.
